On May 5th 2003, I had my first team meeting with my 9 person sales team. Our sales rankings were at the bottom, 20 out of 21, morale and productivity was low while drama, gossip and infighting ran rampant. To top it all off, I had just been promoted to sales manager and had no prior management experience. You can imagine how eyes rolled when I showed the very first slide which read, “This Team Will Be The # 1 Team In The Nation!” However, without hesitation, I clicked on the very next slide which also read, “This Team Will Be The # 1 Team In The Nation!” and stood there quietly. Then one brave soul spoke up and said, “How can you expect us to be # 1 when we are at the bottom of the rankings, in the worst marketplace, and no one on the team is even in the top 50 in sales results?” I simply smiled and said that our past thoughts and behaviors have led to our current results…which are not good. To go from struggling to sales success will require a new vision of what’s possible and a change in our current thoughts and behaviors which will lead to a different future result. We began our training that day on the principles of the fun, simple and profitable Selling In Color system. The following year in 2004, we finished # 2 in the nation and in 2005 we finished # 1 the nation. The best result was that everyone finished in the top 20% and 3 people finished in the top 5%...and our team won an all-expenses paid trip to Cabo San Lucas.
